Listening the Spirit
Lord Jesus, you who are truly God and truly man, I thank you for the baptism you offer to us in the fire of the Spirit. Through this, I receive power and graces, forgiveness of sins and become a new creature, an adopted child of God, a partaker of the divine nature, a temple of the Holy Spirit. Help me every day to welcome you day after day in the simplicity of my life. Amen.
Listening the Word: Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea
and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
It was of him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said:
A voice of one crying out in the desert,
Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.
John wore clothing made of camel's hair
and had a leather belt around his waist.
His food was locusts and wild honey.
At that time Jerusalem, all Judea,
and the whole region around the Jordan
were going out to him
and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River
as they acknowledged their sins.
When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees
coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers!
Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.
And do not presume to say to yourselves,
'We have Abraham as our father.'
For I tell you,
God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees.
Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit
will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
I am baptizing you with water, for repentance,
but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I.
I am not worthy to carry his sandals.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
His winnowing fan is in his hand.
He will clear his threshing floor
and gather his wheat into his barn,
but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
Reflection
The readings for the Second Sunday of Advent invite us to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord. This preparation demands justice, change, and commitment.
The prophet Isaiah announced a new shoot that would grow from the stump of Jesse. This shoot is Jesus, who brings the Spirit of God: wisdom, understanding, strength, and justice. Isaiah offers us the image of the wolf and the lamb living together, just as the cobra and the child coexist. This image is meant to show the power of God, who is capable of building peace even in complex realities. Let us continue striving to build a world of peace, justice, and harmony. Advent invites us to renew this commitment.
The Psalm tells us: where God reigns, there is justice and peace. God listens to the poor, the weak, and those who have no one to help them. This teaches us that preparing for Jesus also means caring for others, especially those in need.
Saint Paul invites us to live in harmony and to welcome one another as Christ welcomed us. We prepare the way of the Lord when we choose to live with love, patience, and unity.
The Gospel of John the Baptist calls us to conversion and demands that we prepare the way, because our faith must be active, it must be reflected in our actions. It is not enough to say that we believe; we must live what we believe.
It is necessary to prepare the way of the Lord through justice, good deeds, and commitment. Advent is not just about waiting for Christmas. It is a time to transform our hearts, correct our mistakes, forgive, help others, and live with honesty and love.
Today, God invites each of us to ask ourselves: What do I need to change in my life? What good fruits can I bear? How can I prepare the way for the Lord in my family, in my community, and in my daily life?Let us live this Advent with a real commitment, so that Jesus may find a heart ready to receive him.
